compressed in y-axis

I have a K40 (Chinese) engraver/cutter and am just starting to learn to use it. I have tried to run a photo image for engraving, using CorelDraw 12 with the CorelLaser plugin. It keeps compressing the y axis spread of the image - the x-axis is fine. I've looked through the settings but cannot find anything obvious that should be causing the issue...but I am missing something, no doubt.
