Engraving Shell

Post by paddyflan »

Hi All

My name is Paddy, and I am hopefully about to venture into the world of Laser Engraving.

I have a general question, which will help me decide whether it is at all possible to engrave my materials.

My intention is to power carve patterns etc on to Scallop Shells (real shells, and not manufactured).

In order to do this I would like to engrave the pattern on to the shell prior to carving.

My question is: Is it at all possible to engrave something undulating like a Scallop Shell? or am I expecting too much of a laser engraver.

If it can be done................are there any specific conditions that have to be met in order for this to be possible.

Any advice greatly welcome.

Best Regards

Paddy

Hi Paddy,
This is Leopold from Central Laser company (website: www.central-laser.com/en/).

First of all, both natural shells and egg shells are 95% CaCO3. In our test, we could mark the production date on the egg by CO2 laser 20W marking machine. Base on the similar element, I believe that laser engraver could help you to put the pattern on shells.

Also, the laser machine could help you to make the carving, here is the reference linking for the egg carving.

However, the only issue is FOCUS. As you know well, the focus is very important for laser marking/carving. If the gap of the high-low is very big, the effects of laser marking might be not very well. Check it out, if you have any additional question, please feel free to contact me.
