Sim panel engraving

I am in the process of building a flight sim.
I have bought some translucent opal acrylic and spray painted it black with plasticoat .I've researched YouTube and Google and found a couple of people etching the black to reveal the white underneath using the Chinese k40 laser.
I only need to engrave text and lines.i don't need to cut the acrylic.
My question is would a diode laser do what I need it to.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
