How do you delete certain lines off of shapes?

Lets say that i had a circle attached to a rectangle. I want it to be all one big shape but if i cut it out, it cuts it into two different shapes. Is there any way to delete that line so i could have an adjoined shape or do i just have to glue it together with wood glue? I need this project done by June so if anyone knows how to do this please tell me.
